Well, after recieving much fuss from the entire open-source community, Aptana started dual licensing. Under this new licensing scheme, Aptana can be licensed two different ways. They have an interesting FAQ, blog post, and comment you may want to check out.
To give you an idea of how well they listen to the community, I recieved this shortly after the “Aptana” post: “Hi Kamisamanou,
I read your blog post and I understand your concerns and objections. Just wanted to let you know that I hope you’ll be happily pleased with an announcement we’re making in the next day or two. Thanks for your long support of the project and hope we can win it back.
Best,
Ingo”
As a result, I am now fully supporting the Aptana project under the GPL.

You know, I’ve always promoted Aptana. It was the freely-distributable web IDE that I thought would one day put Dreamweaver to pasture. I wasn’t entirely right. It turns out that, much to my surprise, Aptana is no longer open source(They took out the “freely-distributable”). A reader of my blog recently sent me to http://mea-bloga.blogspot.com/2007/09/source-open.html. After reading that and the APL itself along with the Open Source Definition I have decided to withdraw from contributing to the project further.
As it appears, the subtle rewording to me is actually a way to rip off developers and users. Developers will contribute code, and Aptana will use them as free labor. Then, users are removed from the privilege to redistribute the app. There is no longer such a thing as giving you friend a copy of Aptana, just making them go to Aptana.com and get it themselves. What’s next? With such a move, shortly after acquiring RadRails, it sounds like once Aptana is done using those who contribute code and they have a full version, that they’ll probably charge you for it. This is just a guess, but who’s to say it won’t happen.
In closing I will say this: For as long as any page on http://*.aptana.com/* contains the words “open” and “source” in any order beside each other, the original, unaltered, binary will be available at http://opensource.kamisamanou.net(here soon) for download per the Open Source Definition unless for some reason I decide to remove it.

Aptana finally moved to subversion. That along with the fact that I am learning Java should increase the amount of contribution I do to the project.
The Songbird team just released a blessed nightly and I must say it is a definite improvement. The default skin has been modified and is quite a lot better than the old one. I’ve noticed it runs slightly faster than previous versions. Oddly enough, it was sitting inside a gtk window instead being “windowless.” A few items on the menu have been rearranged in a way that is much better. The sidebar on the left has also been cleaned up and is looking very organized.
Also, if you ever use Fedora and you’re looking for help: Please us the fedora-list mailing list and not the fedora-websites-list mailing list.

For those not recieving the fedora-announce mailing list, I just wanted to let you know about the Fedora 6 EOL(End of Life) Discussion, and to all, I’d like to reveal my opinion on the matter.
They entered discussion on what to do with the Extras for FC6 after F8 is released. For those who don’t know, the lifecycle for each release is ~13 months or 1 month after release F+2(”F” stands for any Fedora/Core release). Someone mentioned the EOL for the Extras to be a month before their release’s EOL. It was then that someone referenced this page in the Fedora Project Wiki. Upon reading that, I concluded that the policy stated that the release’s Extras were to reach EOL on the same day as the release.
Before reading that information though, I decided that the packages should be removed on the release date of the “final” test release of F+2. My reason for this is two-fold. First, this would give adequate time to test for, and then move compatible packages to the F+x release’s Extras. Second, and quite similar, would be to get package maintainers to start looking to the F+x release a bit sooner.
If you have an opinion that you think is better than mine, let me know.
Everything descriptive is relative.
There are no ends, just beginnings replacing what is or what was.

SciTE(or Scintilla Text Editor) is my newest discovery in the Open-Source world. I heard about Scintilla through the Notepad++(Win) website. My reason for being there was to find an alternative to it for the Linux platform. I wishfully clicked on the link to the Scintilla project hoping to find a *nix editor for my Java class(No, I am not referring to the “executable.”). I located, and downloaded SciTE.
It has, to say the least, a good user interface. You can select your language from the aptly titled “Language” menu. There are herds of other options available in only 2 clicks. This excess is a good thing, in that an “Options/Preferences” button is missing entirely. In Linux, the editing is done by modifying a configuration file, which isn’t that bad in a text editor. The one downfall(or plus depending on your perspective) is that the file is stored in a protected directory, so you will have to use su and nano to edit the file. It also has a wonderful box that, though hidden by default, expands to show errors, processes, and the output of your file. You can resize it quite easily and the editor can be vertically or horizontally split to accomodate to your needs.
Go check it out at http://scintilla.sourceforge.net/SciTE.html

It appears it was just the server that caused the slowdown for Kamisamanou.net. We’re running at full speed now. If you haven’t already, check out the Fedora 7 Docs page for a small tutorial on the Smart Package Manager.

I’ve noticed a dramatic slow-down on parts of my site. It seems to be everything except the homepage and it’s making me upset. It doesn’t seem to be my internet settings or my browser. I’m suspicious that it may be my ISP. I’m hoping it’s not my hosting service, Bluehost. Leave me some comments or send a message to kamisamanou <at> kamisamanou.net if your having a good experience at kamisamanou.net
