Miscellaneous information

For those who are searching for the Docs section, it has been removed from the main menu. It does appear in the OSS Usrbars page, but only due to my laziness. It is not a ploy to get you to check out my usrbars. Meanwhile, those looking to install the Broadcom 4318 Air Force One 54g wireless b/g adapter on standard 32bit systems can check out the following two posts on FedoraForum.org:

Fedora Core 5(and 6?)

Fedora 7

If either of the following methods don’t work, contact me at “jdub2005 -a- gmail -.- com”

Back on Fedora 7

Due to some weird freezing problems I had with FC6 I moved to F7. Thanks to this post, setting up my wireless was a breeze. I’ve got a rather annoying battery problem though. I start college on the 27th of August. I hope to have Aptana up and running by then so that I may continue some web development. I’m also glad to announce that I have a new car. It’s a 1994 Honda Accord LX with 158,xxx miles. My notebook is now sporting 1176mb of memory.

ATTENTION LINUX-ON-LAPTOPS.COM - I was unaware that the url I submitted was supposed to contain specifications of my laptop and experience with it. I apologize for any trouble this may have caused.

Upgraded

While my OS isn’t exactly frontline, I have brought my memory foward a big step. I added a 1GB stick of RAM to my notebook here recently. The upgrade left me with 1.256GB of which 0.128 is used for the video card. I’m very excited about this upgrade and looking forward to Fedora 8 to fix my wifi woes with Fedora 7.

On a non-technical note, I am now the Youth Pastor of my church. I’ll be delivering my first message under that title tonight.

Nexuiz Installer….This Week!

This week is the week I’ll launch, once more, a Nexuiz Installer for Windows. It will be the first of many as the Nexuiz project matures.

*Update*

I won’t be doing the installer. There is an idea for a better one brewing at the Nexuiz Forums.

Smart vs. Yum

I’d heard alot of good about smart, so I installed it… and I removed yum. While smart is hardly easy to figure out due to the update/upgrade commands and a few others, I found it to be lightyears faster than yum. I do however miss the descriptions of the different packages, which are nowhere to be found on smart. On the upside, when searching for a package to install, the layout of smart is clean enough that you can look through dozens of packages without having to scroll that much.

The –help command is very informative in smart, which is good since the learning curve of smart isn’t as delicious as yum. Smart also refers to repositories as channels, which for some may be confusing.

Smart and yum are both alot alike though. The install and remove commands work the same way[packagemanager install/remove package] and like yum -y answers “yes” to any inquiries the program may have for you. Pretty much all of smart’s configuration can be done from the terminal, which beats having to open a text editor.

Overall, smarts speed and abundance of options[which I neglect to mention] make it superior to yum.

Usability - y-5 sm-4

Performance - y-3 sm-5

Configurability - y-4 sm-5

Overall[Avg.] - y-4 sm-4.7

All scores on a 5 point scale. When needed decimals are used and rounded to the nearest tenth.
